Commanders! Do you know how to make the most of your buffs and debuffs?

Buffing and debuffing are an essential part of combat for all Commanders, but there are a few common questions even El Sallia’s finest fighters are not 100% sure about, such as “Why are some buffs not displayed in battle?” and “How can I use debuffs to my advantage?”

Fusion Power skills can provide your team with incredibly powerful buffs, and some heroes, such as Imelda, can provide your team with vital effects like [Mass Attack], that can completely change the outcome of battle.

Can buffs of the same type stack?

Answer: No

There are many hidden elements and rules in Langrisser that affect the flow of each battle, and you may discover that specific buff combinations you assumed may have been possible to in fact be ineffective.

Let’s take a closer look at how certain effects work in Langrisser with the following tactical combat questions.

Question 1

After Grenier uses [Lance Phalanx], Almeda casts [Shield] on him.

Question: How much defense is Grenier granted overall?

Answer: 20%

This is because the identical defense increase effects of [Lance Phalanx] and [Shield] cannot be stacked.

Scenario 2

After Matthew initiates [ATK Command], Imelda uses [Mass Attack].

By how much is the ATK of units adjacent to Matthew increased?

Answer: 30%

As [ATK Command] is an aura effect, it is classified as belonging to a different skill category to other buffs, and therefore can be stacked with similar buff effects.

Scenario 3

Leon’s [ATK Break] has a 50% chance to reduce the enemy’s ATK by 20% before battle.

Grenier’s [Block] has a 30% chance to reduce physical damage taken by 30%.

So, which of these two skills is better?

There are two things to consider when answering this question:▼

If Leon attacks and triggers [ATK Break]’s -20% ATK debuff, by how much will the target’s ATK be reduced?

Answer: 20%

If a target with a -20% damage debuff attacks Grenier and his [Block] is triggered, by how much is their final damage reduced?

Answer: 50%

Effects that trigger before entering battle and effects that trigger in battle do not function in the same way.

Effects that trigger “before entering battle” or “when entering battle” often change your stats. If you turn off combat animation, you’ll be able to see the stat changes on the battle info pop-up panel before the fight begins.

(Before any damage is dealt, you’ll see that stats have already been altered by skill effects.)

Effects that trigger “when attacking” or “when attacked” without any mention of effects triggering before battle, will not change a unit’s status before the battle begins, and will only affect what happens in the battle itself.

Here are some examples:

In the case of Narm’s talent, “When attacking, ATK increases…” means that the ATK increase will not be visible on the pre-battle pop-up panel.

In the case of Matthew’s talent, “When entering battle, if a friendly unit is within 2 blocks, 30% chance to increase ATK & DEF by…” you will be able to view the stat changes before battle.

Does Matthew’s talent conflict with other attack and defense buffs?

Answer: No

Most talents function independently of the skill effects mentioned above.

A simple way of telling buff types apart is to take a look at the buff icons on your hero. If it’s a special icon, that means it’s a special talent buff.

One noteworthy exception to this rule is Sonya.

Her talent doesn’t stack with Mass Protect.

This is because the defense granted by her talent is a basic effect, indicated by its blue shield icon.

[Fusion Powers]

As you probably already know, Fusion Powers grant extremely powerful buffs, but is it always necessary to form a team based around them?

The “ATK & DEF increase significantly…" effect granted by some Fusion Powers actually grants you a combination of regular ATK and DEF buffs, so using these types of Fusion Powers in conjunction with Mass Protect will have no effect.

Some heroes only really need one type of buff to really benefit, especially tanks. If your tank uses Lance Phalanx, or a similar skill, the buff granted is the same as a Fusion Power defense buff, so you may find that your tank doesn’t necessarily have to be part of the same allegiance as the rest of your heroes. As long as they have enough defense, they should be able to protect your team. If your tank doesn’t have a skill like Lance Phalanx, and you’re in need of a defense boost, you should consider using a tank that can benefit from your lineup’s Fusion Power, or find another way to toughen up your tank, such as via enchantments, terrain tactics, or equipment strengthening.
