The Onyx cruiser inherits the role of a heavy disruption ship. The upgraded processor capability and energy allocation ability allow flexible arms selection.
The Onyx cruiser is based on the 0113.1 Type of the Corundum cruiser. In 946 AG, the 0113.6 Type of the Corundum was proposed in the Svarus ""Emerald"" ship upgrade project as a battlecruiser. The Onyx was then developed based on the 0113.6 Type. It adopts the Reactive Reactor Control Unit, which is also used by the Corundum, and its main artillery also adopts the upgraded Predation Shield Disintegrator Beam - a concept named ""Hunting - X"" that was proposed by the Bakr Research Institute of Oracle.
In an experimental improvement project, the SA-N-4 Defense Turret was removed from the Onyx cruiser. The ship was equipped with an SA-N-7 Defense Turret, and a BrahMos Antiship Vertical Launch Unit that was hidden under the ship's armor. The ship's shape was modified to make it capable of stealth. These improvements enhanced the Auto Defense Turret's power to improve the ship's defense.
However, in 986 AG, during the Purge Movement (984 AG - 996 AG), the fact that Legion Commander Yefim was persecuted infuriated some soldiers in the 1135 Legion of the Svarn Northern Fleet. Led by Lieutenant Commander Yevgeny, the political commissar, the soldiers launched an mutiny, and a large number of Onyxes were used.
The government army used Fury battleships to clean up the rebels. The 1135 Legion was almost annihilated. Lieutenant Commander Yevgeny was arrested and was sentenced to execution in the military court.
The rebellion was one of the political reasons why the Onyx battlecruiser was downgraded to a cruiser. Thomas Eguil, an author from the present United Solar Systems of Hygara, complied this event into the famous fiction Scarlet Hunters.
Military observers from the Galaxy Great Council said that the ship adopts an excessive design by using a lot of explosives, and is poor at damage control. But these comments failed to weaken Svarns' faith in the Onyx. Instead, the ship was seen as a symbol of national character.
